The application of canine vapour detection has increased in recent years as both the security and business markets have seen the benefits presented by an efficient specialist search dog team. Many are aware of a search dogs ability to locate explosives, firearms and drugs on scent alone but are unaware of the many other substances that a specialist search dog/detection dog can locate.
Specialist search dogs/detection dogs are operationally deployed to search for currency, both pro-actively and when hidden on the human body, and to find restricted food substances being brought into United Kingdom ports. Specialist search dogs/detection dogs are also deployed to locate illegal immigrants hidden in vehicles coming into the U.K.
Domestically accelerant detection is now an accepted role for a search dog. At the scene of a suspected arson a search dog may locate the seat of a fire in a burnt out building where an accelerant has been used to start the blaze. Dogs may also be deployed to scan people entering nightclubs, not only to find the in-vogue dangerous drugs, but also to scan for other substances including date rape drugs.
